Beautiful essay, Gill. Will never forget your surname (Hophs) either. Seriously though, you're well on your way! Who wouldn't want to submit to you...I certainly can no longer resist. Cheers from Berlin!

Great essay, Gill and a wonderful insight to your perspective on the editorial process. I love the bra analogy... that is so relatable! If an undergarment doesn't fit well or do all it should ( I want my brassiere to make me look and feel like Sophia Loren, not Irene Ryan), I am not going to be comfortable, no matter if I am draped in Versace or Old Navy.

I've read stories that for one reason or another, have taken me out of that 'comfort zone'... the story started well enough and then just as I am really getting into it... an improper tense, "there" instead of "they're" (oh, ask me if there/their/they're is not my pet peeve!) or worse yet, a duplicate word - 'the the red wolf leapt...'. After that, one tends to look for the next 'gaffe' and it is hard to get back into or stay in a story.

My writing 'Waterloo' is commas. I sometimes despair of ever getting the right balance.

Well, I'm off to do a little editing of my own. See what little 'nose pinches' or earlobe tweaks' await me in my own words.

Congratulations on the new position sweetie! I wish you both all the best!

Gill, this is a wonderful, extraordinary laid-back intro to your work. It perhaps tells me more than I need to know (cognizant about the differences between "hte" and "the"), but thanks for allowing me to pick the parts that tickle my cerebellum after three or four GILLS of wine tonight.
